Marine transport or shipping has formed the backbone of the growing international market and globalization ever since the Age of Discovery. Today, it is still undergoing continuous development to satisfy the ever-changing demands of the world trade. Due to the increase in shipping capacity and engine power in the past decade, higher flow velocities generated by larger and more powerful propellers have caused more scour-related damages to the bed and banks of harbor basins and navigation channels, when the under-keel clearance is small and the seabed and banks are not designed for such velocities. Recent research findings on the characteristics of propeller jet flow and its associated scour hole development will be presented. Highlights include new insights on the flow behaviours of a three-dimensional propeller jet in the presence of a plane boundary; the temporal and spatial developments of the unconfined/confined scour hole induced by a propeller jet; and an innovative “oblique particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique”, which allows a synchronous measurement of the flow field and the developing scour profile in a three-dimensional scour hole during the entire scouring process.
报告人介绍:
Prof. Yee-Meng Chiew is an expert in the field of hydraulic and sediment research. He has had more than 30 years of research experience in many aspects of fluvial, hydraulic, coastal and offshore engineering. His particular research interest is in the area of erosion, sediment transport and turbulence. He has published over 200 papers in major international journals and conference proceedings related to hydraulic engineering, and his works have attached around 4200 citations. Currently he is working at the Nanyang Technological University and also a visiting professor of Hohai University. And he is severing as the associate editor of Journal of Hydraulic Engineering—ASCE and International Journal of Sediment Research.
